Those that read this blog regularly know that I rarely delve into controversial topics. The focus is much more about connecting readers with the experts we have all around Emerson Process Management. One of the few posts that caused a dust up was Response to Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus PA Cost Comparison Whitepaper (with a response on the Profiblog). Some of the other back and forth comments are no longer around with the switch in commenting systems here on this blog, which is probably for the best.

Since that time, cooler heads have long since prevailed. I bring all this up because I had a chance to meet and converse with the whitepaper’s author, James Powell. James is with fellow automation supplier, Siemens, and was at the recent Emerson Exchange. He co-presented with Emerson’s Russ Miller and Jacob’s Rajiv Shah a workshop, Great Protocols Think Alike – Profibus and Foundation fieldbus Team Up on a Fascinating Application.

The application was a wind tunnel project and the project team wanted to take a fully digital communications approach. Both Profibus and Foundation fieldbus were used on the project. Profibus DP was used for the fan drives, remote I/O, and a link to a Profibus PA network. The wind tunnel pressure and differential pressures measurements control the fan drives. Rosemount 3051S Ultra-for-Flow (UFF), Foundation fieldbus-based devices were used for these measurements.

James was kind enough to give me an autographed copy of a book he co-authored with Henry Vandelinde titled, Catching the Process Fieldbus–An Introduction to Profibus for Process Automation. You can see a review of the book over at Carl Henning’s Profiblog (I’ll link to it even if he does poke a little fun at my blogging style in his post!)

Speaking of Carl, I had the chance to meet him in person and the Profibus team in person at the PTO General Assembly Meeting this past August. Carl invited me to present on the subject of social media. The presentation was similar to this one, Social Media: Should We, Should We Not, or Should We Ignore the Whole Thing posted in Slideshare. We had a chance to reminisce about those rounds of blog posts.

We’ve all come a long way from those posts where we see story after story of these digital communications-based busses delivering great operational benefits to process manufacturers around the globe.
