A lot of the magic in the oil and gas business is performed on the exploration side. This is where the seismic data is collected and interpreted to know where to drill. Emerson’s Roxar business unit recently announced a new version of reservoir modeling software, RMS 2012. The RMS set of applications are used for mapping, modeling, planning, and managing the workflow through the exploration process.

The news on RMS 2012 release notes three additional capabilities–seismic inversion, seismic visualization and attributes, and field planning. Wikipedia describes seismic inversion as:

…the process of transforming seismic reflection data into a quantitative rock-property description of a reservoir. Seismic inversion may be pre-or post-stack, deterministic, random or geostatistical, and typically includes other reservoir measurements such as well logs and cores.

RMS 2012 Inverse Seismic ModelingThis inversion process allows geoscientists to use seismic data to create a rock property model. In RMS 2012, high frequency information from well logs are combined with the band-limited frequency from the seismic data to provide an inversion with realistic behaviors for the output elastic parameters.

The inverted properties may be used directly in facies and petrophysical modeling.

RMSseismic, the seismic attribute toolkit adds capabilities for creating a range of attributes that facilitate the high-quality interpretation of imported seismic data as well as enhancing the identification of features and properties, which may otherwise be difficult to ascertain from direct observation of the seismic cube.

RMS 2012 - RMSfieldplanningIt aids in the identification of faults and discontinuities, and providing quick recognition of geological patterns and features from the 2D or 3D seismic data.

The RMSfieldplanning module helps to find the optimum locations for cluster pads and to design and generate hundreds of wells that match specific constraints identified in the reservoir models. The cluster pad, target box, and cluster box can be visualized and interactively edited in both 2D and 3D views.

The Roxar brand team has put together an RMS 2012 Overview YouTube video to show these added capabilities in action.
