Connecting Remote Wireless Device Networks Together

How do you connect a remote area with IEC 62591 WirelessHART field devices back to another area of your plant, mill, or field? Emerson’s Neil Peterson shows how to do this in this 1:51 second video taken at the Cisco Connected Industries Booth at Cisco Live 2012.

In the video, Neil describes how the wireless field devices self organize into a communicating mesh network and connect with a wireless gateway. The gateway in turn is connected to a Cisco Wi-Fi Access Point, which can backhaul the information in the wireless devices for several miles. This allows process manufacturers to connect remote locations to the main location for monitoring, control, and data historization.

The wireless mesh access point (MAP) are rated for Class I, Div 2 or ATEX Zone 2 hazardous area environments and communicates through a IEEE 802.11a 5 GHz radio to wirelessly connect the gateway back to the plant network. The Root Access Point (RAP) connects the wireless network to the wired one. A wireless LAN controller is responsible for network-wide wireless functions such as security policies, intrusion prevention, RF management, Quality of Service (QoS), and mobility.
