Onshore LNG Tank Gauging Measurement and Management

As the supply of natural gas continues to swell in parts of the world, the economics to transport this gas to lower supply areas is driving the project planning for liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. One only has to do Google News search on LNG to see all the activity going on.

Storing the LNG in tanks requires significant measurement instrumentation. In this 3:70 YouTube video, Emerson LNG Tank Gauging Solution, Emerson’s Ulf Johannesson, describes how these onshore storage tanks are typically instrumented for control and safety. You may recall Ulf from earlier storage tank-related posts.

In the video, Ulf shows the primary and secondary non-contacting radar level gauges and associated multiple spot temperature sensors, high level alarm, and profile meter that measures the density and temperature profile of the LNG liquid inside the tank.

The measurement instrumentation from the tank is consolidated into a data acquisition and LNG management system. Here is a visual display of the components that Ulf highlights in the video:
