Monitoring Cooling Towers to Avoid Unplanned Downtime

Reliability of plant assets and process operations remains near the top of every manufacturer’s list of concerns. According to the ARC Advisory Group:

The global process industries lose $20 billion, or 5% annual production, due to unscheduled downtime and poor quality. ARC estimates that almost 80% of these losses are preventable.

Equipment failures are included in the list of contributors to unplanned downtime. When you combine this with fewer resources—money and people—keeping your machines running can be a challenge.

Emerson’s Thierry Verheyen and Cranford Johnstone will be focusing on opportunities to improve cooling tower reliability in two webinars, which will be held next Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 10:00 CEST and repeated at 14:30 CEST (8:30am EDT).

For cooling towers, detecting changes in equipment condition such as gearbox electrical motors and cooling water are critical in avoiding damage, environmental incidents and negative business impacts.

These essential assets, like many others such as simple compressors, pumps, fans, and process vessels typically do not have wired monitoring systems like the more critical assets, such as turbine generators, turbine centrifugal compressors, etc. We’ve highlighted several of these essential asset monitoring applications in earlier posts.

With IEC 62591 WirelessHART instrumentation, different process variables can be brought together to provide a more complete picture of the cooling tower. These additional process parameters provide the data needed for analysis to recognize and react to abnormal situations before they lead to unplanned downtime.
