Gas Chromatograph Installation Considerations

Gas chromatographs (GCs) are used to analyze natural gas streams to identify the hydrocarbon components in order to determine the energy content of the gas. Natural gas is typically sold based on the amount of this energy delivered. The quantity of energy delivered is calculated by multiplying the gas volume per unit time by the heating value (BTU) per unit volume.

  1. You can also connect your gas chromatograph using FOUNDATION fieldbus. This way the GC can be installed close to the process tapping point. You eliminate the need for heat traced and insulated sampling lines by simply running a fieldbus cable instead. This makes installation so much easier. It is ideal for module construction where modules can be completed in the fabrication yard as there is no need to run the sampling lines afterwards at site. Analyzer shelters are also simplified. Another advantage is that all the pressure, temperature, and flow transmitters that sit on the sampling system to validate the samples sit on the same fieldbus – all on just two wires – running back to the AMADAS.
