Let’s open the week with a video for DeltaV distributed control system users on ways to integrate devices with Ethernet-based protocols into the DeltaV system. Examples of these devices include motor control centers, variable speed drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and various types of online analyzers.

Emerson's Rune Reppenhagen

In this 6:17 YouTube video, Emerson’s Rune Reppenhagen demonstrates the DeltaV Virtual I/O Module 2 (VIM2) native interface to Ethernet I/O networks such as Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, FMC722 (for subsea applications), and Profinet. The VIM2 also provides completely nonintrusive simulation of all DeltaV S-series I/O modules.

Rune shows a Profinet example of how devices are configured. He first shows a Profinet device definition file for the library and how it is configured in a DeltaV controller and how it simulates four Profibus DP cards. He shows one of the four Profibus cards connected to a Commander SK variable speed drive Profinet device.

From the DeltaV Explorer, he shows inputs and outputs used to control and diagnose this drive. From this point, Rune displays these inputs and outputs coming into a control strategy in the DeltaV Control Studio, just like other forms of I/O connected into the system.

Rune concluded by mentioning that this VIM2 card complements the DeltaV Ethernet I/O card which supports the Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP and IEC61850 MMS digital communications protocols.
