Safety instrumented systems provide a layer of protection beyond the control system to safely shutdown the process during abnormal situations. A safety instrumented function (SIF) or “safety loop” includes the sensing device, logic solver and final control element to perform safety function upon demand.

Flow measurement devices are often the sensing devices in these SIFs. Some flow measurement technologies may experience issues with reliability including plugging, clogging and freezing of impulse lines.

A 3-minute YouTube video, Rosemount SIL Certified Vortex Flow Meters for SIS Applications, describes how these devices can be used in up to SIL 3 safety instrumented functions.

These Rosemount 8800 Series vortex flow meters are designed with an isolated sensor design which isolates the vortex sensor from the process. This design enables safe online replacement without having to shut down or divert the process flow. Wetted material options to handle a wide range of process fluids and conditions include 316 / 316L and CF3M stainless steel, C-22 and CW2M nickel alloy, A105 and WCB high-temperature rated carbon steel, LF2 and LCC low-temperature rated carbon steel and Duplex UNS S32760 and 6A. Other wetted material options are also possible upon request.

The standard Rosemount 8800 meter is capable of up to SIL 2 rated applications. In a dual meter configuration, it is capable for application in up to SIL 3 applications with a one-out-of-two (1oo2) voting arrangement. The Rosemount 8800 quad vortex flow meter uses a dual shedder bar, quadruple sensors and sensing elements, and a quadruple transmitter configuration to meet hardware fault tolerances. It provides two-out-of-three (2oo3) voting with the additional flow sensor and transmitter available for the basic process control system (BPCS).
